Defra collect statistics about age ranges of land holders and found an increase in the average age between 1990 and 2000 in the UK.
In 1990 only 7% of land holders were under 25 and this figure dropped to 5% in 2000. There was also a 3% rise in the number of land holders over 45 years of age, which put the average age of farmers between 54 and 58 in 2000.
