Why are kissing gates romantic?

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

The Kissinggates.com team went walking across the beautiful North Norfolk coast this week and we are sorry for not updating the blog over last couple of days! Anyway on our walk, Hunstanton – Cromer, we came across a lot of kissing gates. These gave us a chance to stop and give each other a kiss as we passed, but what is the history and meaning behind a kissinggate’s name?

The kissing gate is a traditional gate hung in a U or V shape that allows one person to pass at a time. In order for one person to pass fully through the gate they have to close it to the next person. Legend has it that at this point, when the two are on either side of the gate, the person in front “refuses” entry to the second person until presented with a kiss. So we thought what a great name for a rural dating site! Remember it is a lot easier to meet someone on Kissinggates.com than to hide behind a kissing gate waiting for a suitable rambler!
